Details

E. A. Seguy, a French designer of patterns and textiles throughout the Art Deco movement, was known for decorative albums inspired by natural forms. Responding to a lack of resources for decorative artists on the magnificence of winged insects, Séguy showcased the beauty of nature’s architecture. Papillons is a marriage of art, technique, and the natural world. His exotic butterfly specimens were faithfully reproduced through the pochoir technique in which pigment is applied through stencils by hand resulting in depth and texture, giving specimens bold colors and details seldom seen without a microscope. He observed winged insects as “mechanical wonders” suggesting a wealth of vibrant decorative patterns for art and design through his compositions, which have been appreciated by both artists and scientists for almost a century. The examples within this calendar were reproduced from the Papillons album in the collection of the Research Library of the American Museum of Natural History.
