  1. Zoetrope Mini "Classic" Black

From the first scientific toys to modern cinema, they rely on retinal persistence to make us believe that a series of static images are in motion. In 1834, the English mathematician William George Horner proposed an apparatus based on Plateau and Stampfer's Phenakistoscope (1830). It eliminated the need for the mirror and allowed several people to enjoy the instrument and view the animated images at the same time - a great advance over the single viewer allowed by the earlier one. You have to place the strip, turn the drum and look through the slots, to perceive the "movement" of the images. Includes 20 animated picture strips.

Thiebaud boldly paints seven distinct lollipops lying on a counter in Seven Suckers. Each individual lollipop is markedly painted with daring pigments– some are left with just their vivid color, while others are depicted with heart, swirl, or pattern designs. The dark blue shadow of each lollipop connects one to the other and they collectively become a joined whole on the canvas. Thiebaud paints with his usual thick strokes, while also haloing each lollipop and shadow with contrasting colors of yellows, reds, oranges, and blues.

Thiebaud depicts a lone piece of pie locked away in a glass case with his Caged Pie oil piece. Placing the pie in the middle of the canvas, covered by delicately painted shadows of the glass, allows for an element of enticement. By making this still-life painting of a sole pie rather than multiples, Thiebaud presses on viewers’ buttons of cravings and indulgence. The glass covering exagerates this feeling of hungry temptation. Thiebaud successfully invokes childhood memories of locked away sweets by parents with this almost-amusing painting of confined pie.
