The Art Nouvea style became an international phenomenon at the turn of the 20th century )ca. 1890-1915). Believing that art should permeate everyday life, artists working in this new style incorporated organic motifs and asymmetrical curvilinear forms into everything they designs - jewelry, ceramics, household silver, lighting, furniture, and even architecture. Plants, flowers, birds, insects, and beautiful women were all popular motifs. To complete Art Nouveau interiors, artists also designed fabrics for furniture upholstery and wall-coverings. The textiles in this box set are fabric samples recently acquired by VMFA from the manufacturer's archives.
