Although Cassatt completed many portraits of mothers and children, the pyramidal composition of this work highlights the relationship of this everyday scene to the traditional Madonna and Child groupings seen throughout Renaissance art. The mother forms the upper point of the triangle as she gazes down at the baby she holds steady on her lap, and another child kneels at her side holding up a carnation.
