This portrait was staged in front of the artist Mary Cassatt’s window, and provides views of both lush greenery and the urban skyline of Paris. The sitter wears an elaborate and elegant white hat and dress, which the dark fur of the dog on her lap heavily contrasts. Cassatt was an American expatriate in France, and was the only American invited to exhibit with the French impressionists. This work was included in their Eighth Impressionist exhibition in 1886.
