Summer: Cat on a Balustrade, 1909
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, French, born Switzerland, 1859 - 1923 (Artist)

Artist and political activist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen moved to Montmartre, Paris, with his wife in 1881, where their home was quickly nicknamed the “Cat’s Cottage.” A member of the Society for the Protection of Animals, Steinlen often featured neighborhood cats in his compositions. Steinlen originally designed L’Hiver, chat sur un coussin to advertise for the 1909 Exposition des Artistes Animaliers at the Cercle International des Arts. It was so well received that he later printed the piece as a decorative panel with L’eté, chat sur une balustrade as an accompanying design.
